There was one association of churches from 44 - 250 A.D.
During this Era believers used adjectives to describe themselves:

• Christians - Acts 11:26 (Christian was a nickname given to followers of the Christ)
• Churches of Christ - Galatians 1:22 (Gathering of Christ is actually what the original langauge states)
• Churches of God - 1 Corinthians 11:16 ("of God" refers to monotheism which was very rare at that time)
• Churches of the Common Faith - Titus 1:4 ("Common Faith" translated from Greek to Latin is Catholic, an adjective in their time)
